met in the 80's through the little screen, a nice group of kids that here we were presented as " Gang" but originally were known as "Our Gang " or "Little Rascals ."
The creator of this series was a genius named Hal Roach, the architect also from other types of film comedian Harold Lloyd or Laurel and Hardy. " Gang "consisted of two hundred twenty short films and a feature film and was launched in 1922, extending its great success until 1944.
This fun series paraded countless child actors. "Sammy Sunhine" Robinson, Mickey Daniels, Mary Kornman, Allen "Farina" Hoskins, Jean Darlin, Mary Ann Jackson, Gerge "Spanky" McFarland, Dickie Moore, Scotty Beckett, Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer, Pete "the pup" .. .
And Jackie Cooper, who was in the series during 1930 and 1931. But by then, Jackie was a familiar face on the big screen American, which already had peered into a series of short films.
Born September 15, 1922 in Los Angeles (California), John Cooper Jr. belonged to a family dedicated to the art world. Besides being the nephew of director Norman Taurog had a pianist mother and a grandmother who brought him from a very early age to the Hollywood film studios.
And so Jackie first appeared on the big screen in a brief role of a short musical number " Fox Movietone Follies of 1929 ." After this, other short films come to be chosen by Hal Roach to be part of his charming gang.
In 1931, Jackie Cooper was hired to Paramount, for which he would roll "Skippy " feature in which it was directed by his uncle Norman and was a central role. The film, which shared the bill with Robert, brother of the famous Jackie Coogan, marked the launch of Cooper as a small pledge film and was nominated for the Academy Awards that made him, in his ninth year, the first child actor candidate for these awards.
Jackie's career in film was well shaped and in that same year he got another good role as the son of a boxer in " champion." The film was director King Vidor and co-star Jackie, his father on the screen, nothing less than Wallace Beery. Obviously, today "champion" is already a film classic.
Jackie continued to appear successfully in other film credits and in 1934 was elected to another character by which it would be always remembered his of Jim Hawkins " Treasure Island, "directed this time by Victor Fleming and escorted back into the deal by Wallace Beery and Lionel Barrymore's great.
Next came "Dinky " with Mary Astor, " The Return of Frank James " sharing the stage with Henry Fonda and Gene Tierney, " Ziegfield Girls," with James Stewart and Judy Garland ...
After the Second World War, where he was also part of the band, Jackie Cooper moved to New York and began simultaneous theater and television. Participated in a large number of programs for the small screen and appeared in many other television series as "Hennesey" (for which she was nominated twice as an actor at the Emmy Awards), "Hawaii 5-0", "McCloud," "Ironside" "Colombo," "Kojak," "The Rockford Files," "Murder, She Wrote It" ... and won two Emmy Awards as director on the pilot episode of "The White Shadow" (1978) and "Carry on, Hawkeye, one of the episodes of the popular series "Mash."
And in 1978 he returned to win fame among the new generations with its role Perry White, the head of Clark Kent in "Superman ." Jackie also participate in subsequent releases of the legendary superhero film.
announced his retirement in 1989, but still participate in two more television series, "For Jenny with Love" and "Capital News." And in recent years was devoted to the breeding of horses, but no longer available for any documentary that should concern Hollywood's golden years.
Jackie Cooper left us, very sadly, this past Tuesday, 3 May. We also gave her invaluable artistic commitment for no less than eight decades.
Shirley Temple, Jackie Coogan, Virginia Weidler, Mickey Rooney, Margaret O'Brien, Freddie Bartholomew ... And Jackie Cooper.
Thanks, Jackie.
